Notes for WILLIAM PURYEAR:
[Samuel2.FTW]
After their marriage in 1785, William and Rebecca probably moved around 1794 with their family of small children to the Athens, Georgia area. On June 20, 1794, Henry Charleton sold 1,000 acres of land to William Puryear and Sussannah Cox in the County of Franklin, just south of Athens, GA. called the Dogwood Grove tract. Circumstances did not allow William Puryear to enjoy the use of this land very long. Some time before tax-paying time in 1796, William had been murdered on his plantation by his own slaves. The site of this plantation was 5 miles below Athens, GA, but after the murder of her husband, Rebecca moved to the settled community of what was to become the city of Athens and for a time lived on the lot of the present City Hall.
